SOME OF OUR SUPPORTERS FOR THE WALL:

President Bill Clinton: “My prayers are with everyone gathered…I know that your service will be an inspiring memorial to those who lost their lives so senselessly at Jonestown.”

Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi: “Cherishing the Children Memorial Wall will provide a place of comfort and solace to the children’s relatives and loved ones as well as to those who wish to honor the memory of Congressman Leo Ryan and all those who lost their lives. ”

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger: “My special gratitude goes to Dr., Jynona Norwood for her remarkable compassion and determination to gather the funds and resources needed for your memorial.”

Mayor James T. Butts: I commend Dr. Jynona Norwood and Cherishing the Children for their tremendous efforts in remembering the men, women and children who lost their lives in Jonestown, Guyana.

Dr. Maya Angelou: “I heartily support the idea of a tributary wall dedicated to the spirits of those who were lost. I will be pleased to write a dedication to be inscribed on an architecture built for those purposes.”

Congresswoman Maxine Walters: We must never forget that tragic event. For those of us who were around at that time, the memorial will serve as a constant reminder that while the pain of losing a loved one never fades, it must also arouse in us the desire to do good each day of our lives.

Congresswoman Barbara Lee: “I support your efforts… Again, thank you for all of the work you are doing to create this Memorial.”

Civil Rights Leader Dick Gregory: “I feel very privileged and indeed honored to praise Dr. Norwood and the staff for their tireless efforts of making the dream of the Memorial Wall a reality for all.”

Mayor Libby Schaaf: “On behalf of the City of Oakland, I would like to extend my best wishes to the Official Jonestown Memorial Services and… keeping the memories of the victims alive.”

Senator Dianne Feinstein: “I am proud to recognize all the staff and volunteers of the Guyana Tribute Foundation. Your work will help ensure that we will never forget the victims of Jim Jones. You are in my thoughts and prayers.”

Mayor Elihu M. Harris: “I support the construction of the Jonestown Memorial Wall to commemorate the Jonestown tragedy. This is an important issue and I will help in every way to make the memorial Wall a lasting reminder so that these men, women, and children have not perished in vain.”

Dr. Jynona Norwood is the executive director of The Cherishing the Children Jonestown Memorial Services and Wall. Her family suffered the greatest lost in numbers. A total of twenty-seven (27) loved ones as well as the youngest child lost that day, a three month old baby. She now remains committed after 30 years of bringing healing to families and the world through pursuit of the Cherishing the Children Jonestown Healing Memorial Wall at Evergreen Cemetery in Oakland, California where four hundred and six (406) victims are buried — and most of them are children. Dr. Norwood says, “We must clear our minds and pledge to never let this happen again anywhere in the world by honoring and remembering the sacred 305 children’s silent screams.”
On November 18, the 44th anniversary of one of the nation’s most horrific mass deaths in American history involving some 918 people, 305 children, 40 infants, mostly African-Americans who perished in Guyana, was historically marked by the unveiling of a portion of the long-awaited wall to commemorate innocent children that were lost.
Amidst the tears and her strong faith in God, Dr. Norwood, a Los Angeles Pastor of the Family Christian Cathedral, stands as strongly today as when she first began the journey of acknowledging those who perished long before anyone thought about it. Her love and commitment has not gone unnoticed. San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom recognized Dr. Norwood for raising public awareness with the 30th Annual Jonestown Healing Memorial Services and unveiling the Cherishing The Children Jonestown Memorial Wall to honor the lives of the children who died.

Dr. Norwood says, “We must clear our minds and pledge to never let this happen again anywhere in the world by honoring and remembering the sacred 305 children’s silent screams.”
